Tiramisu

Tiramisu is one of the world’s most famous Italian desserts. It is a trifle made of layers of ladyfinger biscuits (or sponge cake) dipped in espresso or coffee, layered with sweet, creamy mascarpone cheese, and dusted with cocoa powder. Some recipes use a liqueur, such as coffee-flavored rum or sweet marsala wine.

The dessert is believed to have been invented in the Treviso area, north of Venice. It is credited to a Maitresse at a brothel who developed it as an aphrodisiac for her customers.

Today, the dish is enjoyed all over the world. It is a popular dessert at restaurants that specialize in authentic Italian cuisine.
