The different schools of philosophic thought stretch back across the centuries. They range is approaches to life from embracing meaninglessness to rigid self-discipline as an approach to living. Among these various considerations of the human condition, the mysteries of existence and what happens after we pass from this life is a concept that has enduring appeal. Kindness is found in some of the greatest thinking that has ever taken place. The idea that we can spread kindness to those about us seems to resonate with many who contemplate life and living.

Many great thinkers of history treat kindness as a desirable trait to be sought after. Some examples help to see how this simple notion of treating others with respect and acting empathically toward our fellows are truly inspiring.

Aesop

The author of so many fables that contain some element of moral teaching is quoted as saying, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” This reflects the idea that the magnitude of a kind act does not determine its intrinsic value.

Dalai Lama

This spiritual leader and thinker of great influence has said, “Only the development of compassion and understanding for others can bring us the tranquility and happiness we all seek.” While lacking direct reference to kindness this quote clearly contemplates the ideals of kindness by embracing compassion and understanding.

The School of Life

In the literature of this organization, under the heading of “Sociability” the following is stated, “Kindness remembers how there might still be virtue amidst a lot of evil.” This quote ascribes a trait to the concept of kindness that off-sets a natural tendency to focus on negative and despair. Instead, it highlights the positivity that exists despite a seeming preponderance of negative emotions.

These examples and many others can serve as reminders that good still does exist in the world and that passing it along in acts of kindness helps improve lives all the time. Kindness overcomes many barriers that separate people and displays the best of what it means to be human.
